Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman has truly been a God-sin for Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Cinematic Universe. Their first three installments – Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad – have all had less-than-favorable critical and financial success. But Wonder Woman proved to everyone that there’s still plenty of hope for the DECU yet. The film received strong critical acclaim, made huge waves at the box office, and has everyone begging for a sequel. And wouldn’t you know it, Jenkins has our back.
At a screening and Q&A for her film, Jenkins announced that she would love to be return for Wonder Woman 2. The director explained that she recently had “an epiphany” about what her future holds, and that doing a sequel to the first film should be part of it. Take a look below at Jenkins’ full statement at the Women in Film screening (via Advocate).
“I had an epiphany about Wonder Woman 2. I was like, you don’t have to do this. It doesn’t have to be a foregone conclusion that you do Wonder Woman 2. But then as I was falling asleep I had an epiphany. I was like, Wait a minute. You have the greatest character of all time that you love dearly, with a cast that you love sitting at the palm of your hand at this day and age — you can do whatever you want with them — are you crazy? And then I suddenly realized, it’s not more, it’s another movie. It’s its own movie. And it’s got to be great.
It’s a continuation of the same character, but there’s a great, entirely different story to be told. With this character in our—in the world, that’s fun, because now she exists, just funny, and also says something profound about the world we’re in right now.”
Even if this isn’t an official confirmation, it seems very likely Jenkins will come back for Wonder Woman 2. But even if the sequel is a long ways away, fans will surely get their fill of the beloved character when she reappears in Zack Snyder’s Justice League this November. What’s important to keep in mind, however, is that Warner Bros. is also developing sequels to Suicide Squad, Man of Steel, and more. So it’s hard to say at this point what Wonder Woman 2 will be. Luckily, we know that the talented Patty Jenkins will more than likely be back behind the camera. That should keep most fans satisfied for the time being.
Wonder Woman 2 is currently without a release date, but we will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
