Trailer: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

It was only a matter of time before Hollywood decided to reboot yet another classic like Jumanji in the hopes of it becoming an action franchise. At least, that’s what Sony’s first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle seems to be shooting for. It’s hard to say at this point if an odd sequel like this one will appeal to fans – or completely deter them from it. But the new footage is definitely not as cringeworthy as you may expect.

Welcome to the Jungle follows a group of four teenagers who stumble across the ancient game known as Jumanji – but upon further examination they are all suddenly sucked into the game’s world as “avatars,” played by Dwayne Johnson (The Fate of the Furious), Karen Gillian (Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2), Kevin Hart (Ride Along), and Jack Black (Tropic Thunder). The premise may not be exactly what some may be hoping for in a Jumanji sequel, but it’s at least trying to incorporate an enticing twist.

The trailer features plenty of big action, thrills and – surprisingly – a few laughs as well. It is important to note, however, most of the jokes that land all come from the hilarious Jack Black. Other than that, this one could go either way.

It’s also no surprise Sony cast such huge stars like Johnson and Hart in this risky blockbuster – although that’s no sure bet for success considering the two acted together in the lackluster Central Intelligence last year. What is comforting about the sequel is there are reportedly some homages to the late Robin Williams, which is plenty good enough for me to give this one a look this Christmas. But you can decide for yourself by checking out the trailer below.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle swings into theaters on December 20th, 2017.
