Episode 9 of The Film Buds Podcast will record Wedensday morning! We will be reviewing Kathryn Bigelow’s harrowing new thriller, Detroit, then will complement that with a retro review of one her other acclaimed films, Point Break (1991). Later we will be discussing Blade Runner 2049‘s R-rating, the best films about female obsession, how the FIRST special monthly show of The Film Buds is officially happening, and a look back at Sundance 2017. Let’s talk movies!
Detroit tells the true story of the tragedy at the Algiers Motel in Detroit during the 1960s race riots, where three innocent people were murdered. While the film does show other aspects of the riots, the film mostly focuses on that one terrifying night. It stars John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Civil War), and Will Poulter (The Revenant).
Starring Keanu Reeves (John Wick) and Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing), the 1991 action thriller follows an FBI agent who goes undercover to investigate a group of surfers who may also be bank robbers. Also directed by Kathryn Bigelow, Point Break remains an action favorite and has – very noticeably – inspired many films since.
