There’s often going to be a divide between how critics and audiences view films. It’s a hard thing to predict, and a lot of times it doesn’t make since how or why opinions vary so greatly. What’s evens stranger is that many Hollywood movies that receive harsh critical reviews still go onto have strong financial success. However, Darren Aronofsky’s mother! looks to be a very rare and unfortunate exception. The psychological horror film received a dismal F rating on CinemaScore from U.S. audiences this weekend. And despite Jennifer Lawrence’s major star power, the film earned only $3.1 million opening day for projected $8 million weekend. These brutally low numbers will surely only continue since Stephen King’s It 10-day domestic haul should near $220 million by today. It’s no surprise that a crazy movie like mother! is performing so poorly — but its noticeable impact is maybe more than what the studio wanted.
