Episode 14: mother! and Retro Review – Crimson Peak (2015)

Episode 14 of The Film Buds Podcast will cover Darren Aronofsky’s wild new horror film mother! and Guillermo Del Toro’s haunted house gem Crimson Peak (2015). We’ll also tackle new trailers for Tomb Raider and Pixar’s Coco, some listener questions, and more!

Directed by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), mother! tells the story of a married couple living in tranquility out in the countryside when suddenly a stranger shows up on their doorstep. As the couple learns more about the stranger, suspicious activity begins to occur as the wife (Jennifer Lawrence) begins to completely unravel. The film also stars Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Crimson Peak (2015)

This supernatural haunted house thriller follows a young woman who marries a newfound love and travels to his family’s home out in the country. But (much like mother!, wink, wink), the woman begins noticing strange things around the house and soon begins to question her husband’s true intentions. The film is directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), and stars Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston. Jessica Chastain, and Charlie Hunnam.

Darren Aronofsky’s mother! Earns Dismal F CinemaScore Rating

mother-2017-005-jennifer-lawrence-hands-wallThere’s often going to be a divide between how critics and audiences view films. It’s a hard thing to predict, and a lot of times it doesn’t make since how or why opinions vary so greatly. What’s evens stranger is that many Hollywood movies that receive harsh critical reviews still go onto have strong financial success. However, Darren Aronofsky’s mother! looks to be a very rare and unfortunate exception. The psychological horror film received a dismal F rating on CinemaScore from U.S. audiences this weekend. And despite Jennifer Lawrence’s major star power, the film earned only $3.1 million opening day for projected $8 million weekend. These brutally low numbers will surely only continue since Stephen King’s It 10-day domestic haul should near $220 million by today. It’s no surprise that a crazy movie like mother! is performing so poorly — but its noticeable impact is maybe more than what the studio wanted.

Darren Aronofsky’s mother! is currently playing in theaters. Feel free to blast off your thoughts on the film below!

Red Sparrow Trailer Sees Jennifer Lawrence Getting Seductive

Coming off Charlize Theron’s killer performance in this summer’s Atomic Blonde, it now seems another actress wants in on the spy genre. Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men: Days of Future Past) stars in the upcoming thriller Red Sparrow, and 20th Century Fox has just released the first trailer. The spy film reunites Lawrence with Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence, so hopefully their past collaborations will help make Red Sparrow a memorable entry in the genre. It features Lawrence as an expert government agent who uses seduction — and any other means necessary — to eliminate her target.

Red Sparrow also stars Joel Edgerton (It Comes at Night), Jeremy Irons (Assassin’s Creed), and Matthias Schoenaerts (The Danish Girl). The film is set to hit theaters on March 2nd, 2018. Get a few kicks and punches in by watching the trailer below.
