Tomb Raider Trailer Shows Alicia Vikander Lost in the Jungle

Alicia-Vikander-Lara-Croft-Tomb-Raider

Warner Bros. has released the first official trailer for the Tomb Raider reboot. The studio previously released two short teasers yesterday, but this latest look gives fans a deep look into the video game adaptation. Starring Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Tomb Raider is based off the bestselling video game series about young female adventurer Lara Croft who explores ancient tombs and lost civilizations. The studio is hoping to successfully reboot the series after Angelina Jolie’s two ill-received Tomb Raider movies back in 2001 and 2003. And luckily it looks as though Vikander and director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) have found a great balance between pleasing Tomb Raider fans while also creating a strong female action hero for a modern audience.

Tomb Raider also stars Walton Goggins, Dominic West, and Nick Frost. The film will swing into U.S. theaters on March 16th, 2018. Check out the new trailer and poster below.

Tomb Raider Star Alicia Vikander Talks Lara Croft’s Revival

The Tomb Raider reboot is by far one of the most exciting movies coming in 2018. It’s being helmed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave), and stars Alicia Vikander (The Man From U.N.C.L.E) as the iconic adventurer Lara Croft. Based off the renowned video game franchise, Tomb Raider will again follow Croft on her many wild adventures through ancient landmarks – only in this case, she will be a much younger and less-experienced version than previous depictions.

The character was last seen on the big screen in 2003’s Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life, starring Angelina Jolie. And we all know how that one went. Until recently it seemed like there was no chance the series would ever be rebooted – especially with Hollywood’s ongoing losing streak of video game adaptations like Prince of Persia, Warcraft, and even the underrated Assassin’s Creed. Thankfully, Vikander and company made it happen. Not only that, it really seems like the film is heading down the right path.

Speaking to EW, Vikander revealed that her version of Croft will be separate from Jolie’s in more ways than one. She explained how Tomb Raider will be an origin story for the character – meaning that Croft will be a first-time explorer in the film. Furthermore, Croft will first appear as a pretentious businesswoman before she transforms into the tough adventurer that we know today.

She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits, but we’ve stripped away all of her experience. She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet. She thought he was a stuck up businessperson living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning.

Tomb-Raider-2018-New

Vikander is also inspired to bring a strong female action-hero to the big screen after her viewing of Wonder Woman earlier this year:

I went to the cinema and saw Wonder Woman the other day. It’s a mixture of joy and sadness pouring over me, as I was thinking, ‘Oh, my God, I haven’t seen women onscreen like that.

It will be interesting to see what approach both Vikander and Uthaug take to the film. Croft has a very rich and exciting backstory, so the possibilities are truly endless with what a reboot of this kind could do. And if Tomb Raider performs well, then it could also be the start of a fantastic new franchise.

We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
